Most people will never see an ASML machine. They are massive, labyrinthine structures of glass, mirrors, and vacuum chambers, often costing over $200 million and requiring a dedicated team of engineers just to keep them running. The industry progressed from using visible light to deep ultraviolet (DUV) light. But as engineers aimed for transistor structures just a few nanometers wide—a few dozen atoms across—DUV reached its physical limits. They needed a much shorter wavelength: extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light.
Herein lies the problem. EUV light, with a wavelength of 13.5 nanometers, is absorbed by almost everything. It doesn't pass through air, or through the glass lenses used in previous machines. Generating it in sufficient quantities was a monumental challenge. ASML's solution, developed over two decades of relentless R&D, is a masterpiece of extreme engineering. Inside its EUV systems, a high-powered laser blasts tiny droplets of molten tin 50,000 times per second. Each blast creates a plasma that emits the faint EUV glow. This light is then collected and directed by a series of mirrors polished to an almost atomically perfect smoothness, all within a perfect vacuum.
This process is so delicate, so precise, and so reliant on a global supply chain of specialized components that no other company has been able to replicate it at a commercial scale. Competitors tried and fell by the wayside. ASML is now the sole supplier.

ASML’s dominance isn’t just about having a better product. It’s about a business model that is deeply intertwined with its customers. The company doesn’t just sell a tool and walk away. Furthermore, ASML’s revenue doesn’t stop at the sale. A huge portion comes from servicing these complex machines, providing the constant stream of upgrades, spare parts, and on-site engineering support required to keep a $200 million tool producing flawless chips 24/7. This creates a sticky, long-term relationship and a steady stream of high-margin income.
The Geopolitical Lightning Rod
This unique position has turned ASML into an unlikely player in international politics. The ability to manufacture the most advanced chips is now seen as a matter of national security and economic sovereignty. Consequently, ASML’s EUV machines have become strategic assets, subject to intense export control negotiations.
The company cannot sell its most advanced EUV systems to China without a specific license from the Dutch government, under pressure from allies. This has created a complex and delicate diplomatic dance. ASML’s leadership must navigate the demands of Western governments, the needs of its Chinese customers (who are major buyers of its older DUV tools), and its own commercial interests. The company’s sales figures are now dissected not just by Wall Street analysts, but by foreign policy experts and defense officials.
The Weight of Being Indispensable
Being the sole provider of a technology upon which the world’s economic and military future depends is a heavy burden. ASML must continuously innovate, pushing the boundaries of physics for the next generation of "High-NA EUV" systems to keep Moore's Law alive. It must manage a supply chain of over 5,000 suppliers, many of which are themselves monopoly providers of a single, critical component. A single disruption can halt the production of the world’s most advanced chips.
