Tow Safely: What to Do When Your Vehicle Breaks Down

A tow is something most drivers hope they will never need, but a dead battery, flat tire, overheated engine, or minor collision can quickly turn an ordinary journey into a stressful situation. Knowing what to do before the tow truck arrives can protect you, your passengers, and your vehicle.

The safest place to stop is away from moving traffic. If the car is still running, guide it toward the shoulder, a parking area, or another location with as much distance from the road as possible. Turn on the hazard lights, especially at night or during poor weather. If the vehicle is in a dangerous position, do not stand behind it or attempt repairs in the traffic lane. Staying inside with the doors locked may be safer than walking around the car, unless there is an immediate risk such as smoke, fire, or a serious crash.

Before calling for a tow, check whether your insurance policy, vehicle warranty, or automobile club includes roadside assistance. Some drivers also receive towing coverage through a credit card or a service plan. Knowing what is included can prevent an unpleasant surprise when the bill arrives. Ask whether the service covers a specific distance, the type of vehicle being moved, and any extra charges for nighttime or holiday assistance.

When speaking with the towing company, give precise information. Tell the dispatcher your location, the direction of travel, the nearest exit or landmark, and the problem with the vehicle. Mention whether the car is in a garage, on a narrow street, or unable to roll. A four wheel drive vehicle, electric vehicle, lowered car, or vehicle with significant damage may require special equipment. Clear details help the company send the right truck rather than wasting time with a vehicle that cannot handle the job.

It is also wise to confirm the price before agreeing to the service. Ask about the basic hookup charge, mileage rate, storage fees, and payment methods. A reputable operator should be willing to explain the estimate. When the truck arrives, check the company name and vehicle identification before handing over the keys. If the situation feels suspicious, call the service provider again using the number from your insurance card or membership account.

Remove valuable belongings from the vehicle whenever possible. Take out wallets, electronics, documents, house keys, and anything that could be damaged during transport. Photograph the exterior and interior of the car before it is loaded. These pictures create a simple record of its condition, particularly after a collision.

The way a vehicle is towed matters. Some cars can be lifted from the front or rear, while others need a flatbed truck. Automatic transmissions, all wheel drive systems, electric motors, and damaged wheels may make ordinary towing unsuitable. Trying to pull a modern vehicle with a rope or an unsuitable vehicle can cause expensive damage. Emergency roadside advice found online is not a substitute for the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

After the tow, keep the receipt and ask where the vehicle has been taken. If it is going to a repair shop, confirm the shop’s address and opening hours before delivery. A little preparation cannot prevent every breakdown, but it can make a difficult roadside experience calmer, safer, and less costly.
