Mikael Granlund: More Than a Signature Goal

On May 6, 2011, a 19-year-old Finn named Mikael Granlund did something that most professional hockey players had never even attempted in a competitive match. During a World Championship game against Russia, he took the puck behind the net, lifted it onto the blade of his stick, and swung it into the top corner before the goaltender could react. The highlight spread across the internet within hours, and it became an instant reference point for a new generation of skill.
For a long time, that goal overshadowed everything else about Granlund. Some called it a fluke. Others called it a masterpiece. But the people who watched him every night knew it was never just one lucky moment. It was simply the loudest expression of a very particular way of playing hockey.
Granlund grew up in Oulu, a city in northern Finland with a deep hockey culture. He came through the youth system of Kärpät, the same club that produced many Finnish stars. From an early age, he played with his older brother Markus, and that close relationship sharpened both of them. Mikael’s game was built on anticipation. He rarely used brute force to win a battle. Instead, he relied on his edges, his patience, and his ability to see a play a half-second before anyone else.
When the Minnesota Wild called his name with the ninth pick in the 2010 NHL Draft, many expected a future first-line superstar. Granlund did not become that, at least not in the traditional sense. He was a reliable middle-six forward in the NHL, capable of playing both center and wing. His best seasons in Minnesota were quietly productive. He earned the trust of coaches because he could be used in all situations—power play, penalty kill, late-game ties. He turned the puck over rarely, and when he had it, the play went forward.
On the international stage, Granlund has been one of Finland’s most valuable forwards for over a decade. His ability to slow the game down on the power play gave Finland a constant threat in tight tournaments. In 2022, he was part of the Finnish team that won Olympic gold in Beijing, the first in the country’s history. He played an important role throughout that tournament, not necessarily on the scoresheet every night, but in the way he helped break down defenses.
The second half of his NHL career has been a reminder that patience and adaptability matter. After Minnesota traded him to Nashville in 2019, he spent several seasons with the Predators. In 2023, a deadline deal sent him to Pittsburgh, and in the summer, he signed with San Jose. On a young Sharks team, Granlund instantly became one of the most watchable players—not for flashy goals, but for the calm composure he brought to every shift.
It is tempting to ask whether Granlund underachieved. His offensive numbers never matched the billing of a ninth overall pick. But that way of looking at his career misses the point. His value was never purely statistical. There is a type of hockey intelligence that shows up in passing lanes, in splitting two defenders without losing a step, in the subtle fakes that open a shooting lane for a teammate. Granlund has played the game with that intelligence, season after season.
The miracle goal from 2011 was never the beginning of something bigger—it was just a memorable flash of what he had always been capable of. As he moves toward the final chapter of his career, Granlund leaves behind a model for what a complete, creative player looks like. He did not need to be the biggest star on the ice. He simply needed to be the smartest, and on many nights, he was.
