She danced at a private party, someone leaked the video, and she refused to resign despite calls for her to step down. Her response was essentially: I was having fun. So what?
The scandal, if it deserved the name, revealed a double standard that rarely applies to male politicians who have survived far more compromising footage.
Policy vs. Persona
What gets lost in the sneaker discourse is that Marin's government actually accomplished substantial things. Finland reached NATO membership during her tenure. She steered the country through the COVID-19 pandemic with relatively low death rates. Her coalition passed ambitious climate legislation. She pushed for six-hour workday experiments and parental leave reforms.
Yet international coverage often treated these achievements as secondary to her age, her gender, and her social media presence. Foreign newspapers ran profiles analyzing her "relatable" Instagram as if it were her primary qualification. This backhanded compliment—impressed that someone so young and photogenic could also govern—would never be paid to a middle-aged man in a gray suit.
Marin herself seemed aware of the contradiction. She noted in interviews that she had never sought to be a symbol, only to do her job. But symbolism in politics is not optional. Every leader becomes a projection screen for national anxieties and aspirations. Finland's choice of a millennial woman represented something about where the country saw itself heading, just as her electoral defeat in 2023 represented something about political cycles and voter fatigue.
The Aftermath
Since leaving office, Marin has maintained a lower profile than her celebrity might suggest. She joined a think tank, gave some speeches, and largely avoided the immediate pivot to corporate boards that many Western politicians pursue. Her trajectory suggests someone still figuring out how to wield influence outside formal office, rather than someone racing to monetize fame.
The question her career raises remains uncomfortable: Can any young woman in politics escape being reduced to her style, her family choices, or her social media presence? Marin tried to normalize young female leadership simply by treating it as normal. The fact that her sneakers still made global news suggests the project remains incomplete.
But someone had to wear them first.
