A router table turns a handheld router into a more stable cutting tool. Instead of guiding the router across the top of a workpiece, you mount it underneath a flat table and move the wood over the bit. This setup is especially useful for making repeated cuts, shaping edges, cutting grooves, and producing cleaner joinery.
Before switching on the router, make sure the table is stable and the router is firmly secured. The insert plate should sit level with the tabletop, and the opening around the bit should be as small as practical. A large gap can allow narrow pieces of wood to fall into the opening or catch on the edge. Check that the bit is properly seated in the collet, leaving a small amount of space at the bottom rather than pushing it fully into the collet.
Choose the bit and cutting height for the job. Raise the bit only as high as needed. A shallow pass is usually safer and produces a cleaner result than trying to remove a large amount of material at once. For a deep groove or a wide profile, make several passes and adjust the height gradually. Unplug the router whenever you change bits or make adjustments.
The fence controls the position of the workpiece and helps keep the cut consistent. Set it so the wood contacts the fence smoothly without forcing the material sideways. If the fence has two adjustable faces, align them carefully. A straight, square fence is important when cutting rabbets, dados, or other joinery. For small workpieces, use a push block or a purpose-made jig rather than placing your fingers close to the bit.
Feed direction is one of the most important things to understand. When the router bit is turning normally, the workpiece should usually move against the rotation of the bit. This is called conventional feeding. It gives you better control and helps the bit pull the wood against the fence instead of grabbing it and pushing it away. Feeding in the opposite direction, known as climb cutting, can cause the workpiece to lurch unexpectedly and should not be used casually.
Stand to the side of the workpiece rather than directly behind it. Wear eye and hearing protection, keep loose clothing away from the bit, and wait for the bit to stop completely before reaching near the table. Dust collection is also valuable because routing can produce a surprising amount of fine dust. Keep the tabletop clear of offcuts, tools, and anything else that could interfere with the workpiece.
Test every setup on scrap wood. A short test piece can reveal whether the bit height, fence position, and feed direction are correct before you cut the actual board. It also shows how the grain reacts. Wood can splinter badly when a profile exits the end of a board, so supporting the workpiece and taking a light final pass can improve the edge.
A router table becomes much easier to use when the setup is repeatable. Mark common fence positions, keep suitable push blocks nearby, and use featherboards when extra pressure against the fence or tabletop is needed. Take your time during setup; most routing mistakes happen before the motor is turned on. With a secure table, a correctly adjusted fence, shallow passes, and controlled feeding, even a beginner can produce clean and dependable results.
