# What Is an Eclipse?

Only a narrow path on Earth—the path of totality—experiences a total eclipse. Outside that path, a partial eclipse is visible.

When the Moon only covers part of the Sun, you see a partial solar eclipse. The Sun appears as a crescent shape. This is visible from a broader area but lacks the dramatic darkness of totality.

In an annular eclipse, the Moon is farther from Earth in its orbit, so it appears slightly smaller than the Sun. It doesn't cover the Sun completely, leaving a bright ring, or "ring of fire," around the Moon. This is also a type of partial eclipse, but it's specially named because of the visible ring.

A hybrid eclipse is rare. It shifts between a total and annular eclipse along its path. It starts as annular, becomes total, and then returns to annular. This happens because the curvature of Earth changes the apparent size of the Moon relative to the Sun.

Lunar eclipses are more common than solar eclipses and are safe to view with the naked eye. They happen when the Moon passes through Earth's shadow.

The Moon moves completely into Earth's umbra (the darkest part of the shadow). Instead of going dark, the Moon often takes on a reddish hue—this is why some people call it a "blood moon." The red color comes from sunlight filtering through Earth's atmosphere, which scatters blue light and bends red light onto the Moon.

Only part of the Moon enters Earth's umbra. The rest remains in the penumbra or outside the shadow, so you see a dark chunk on one side of the Moon.

The Moon only passes through the outer, fainter shadow (penumbra). This is subtle and often hard to notice unless you're looking carefully. The Moon may appear slightly dimmer.

Safety is a major concern for solar eclipses because looking directly at the Sun can cause permanent eye damage. Here are the essential rules:

**Never look at the Sun directly** during a solar eclipse without proper eye protection. Regular sunglasses, camera filters, or smoked glass are not safe. Use certified eclipse glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Alternatively, you can use a solar filter on a telescope or binoculars, or build a pinhole projector to watch the eclipse indirectly.

During a total solar eclipse, it is safe to remove your glasses only during the brief period of totality when the Sun is completely covered. As soon as the Sun starts to reappear, put your glasses back on.

For lunar eclipses, no special protection is needed. You can look at the Moon with your eyes or binoculars safely.

Eclipses occur in seasons, roughly every six months. The exact dates and locations vary. Solar eclipses are visible only from specific regions on Earth, often from remote areas. Lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on the night side of Earth, making them more accessible.

If you want to plan ahead, many websites and apps provide eclipse maps and timetables. The next total solar eclipse visible from a populated area often draws thousands of travelers to the path of totality. For example, the 2024 total solar eclipse across North America was a major event.

- **Eclipses are dangerous to pregnant women or unborn babies.** This is a cultural myth with no scientific basis. Eclipses are natural events and pose no physical harm beyond the obvious risk of looking at the Sun.
- **The Moon turns black during a lunar eclipse.** Actually, the Moon turns red, not black. The darkness you see is just the shadow, but the red color is real.
- **Eclipses cause earthquakes or disasters.** There is no evidence linking eclipses to geological events. They are purely astronomical alignments.
- **You can't take photos of an eclipse without special equipment.** You can take great photos with a smartphone through a telescope or by using a solar filter. But for a lunar eclipse, even a regular camera on a tripod can capture the red Moon.

Eclipses have been important for scientific discovery. The 1919 total solar eclipse helped confirm Einstein's theory of general relativity, as scientists observed the bending of starlight around the Sun. Today, eclipses allow astronomers to study the Sun's corona, which is usually hidden by the Sun's bright light. Solar eclipses also provide opportunities to study the Earth's atmosphere and animal behavior during sudden darkness.

If you have the chance to witness an eclipse, plan ahead. Check the time and location, prepare your viewing equipment, and find a spot with a clear horizon. For a solar eclipse, arrive early to set up and watch the partial phases. For a lunar eclipse, you can watch from your backyard, no special travel needed.

Take the time to observe the surroundings. During a total solar eclipse, you may notice the temperature drop, birds stop singing, and the sky becoming an eerie twilight. These subtle changes add to the experience.
