Earthquake Preparedness Begins Before the Ground Moves

An earthquake is one of the few disasters that can turn an ordinary moment into an emergency without warning. There may be no time to gather belongings, check the news, or decide where to go. The most useful preparation happens quietly, weeks or months before the shaking starts.

The basic response is simple: drop, cover, and hold on. Drop to the ground before the movement knocks you down. Cover your head and neck under a sturdy table or desk if one is nearby. Hold on until the shaking stops, even if the furniture moves. Standing in a doorway is not generally the safest option, and running outside during the shaking can expose you to falling glass, bricks, cables, and other debris.

Where you are matters. At home, identify safe places in each room, keeping away from windows, tall shelves, mirrors, and heavy objects mounted above beds or sofas. A bookcase that seems harmless on a normal day can become a serious hazard when it tips. Secure large furniture to the wall, store heavy items on lower shelves, and avoid placing fragile objects where they can fall onto people.

At work or school, learn the building’s emergency procedures instead of assuming they will be obvious. During an earthquake, elevators may stop working, stairways may be crowded, and alarms may create confusion. After the shaking ends, leave only when it is safe and follow instructions from emergency personnel. Do not re-enter a damaged building simply to retrieve a phone, wallet, or pet carrier.

A small emergency kit can make the first hours less difficult. Useful supplies include drinking water, nonperishable food, a flashlight, spare batteries, a first-aid kit, necessary medication, sturdy shoes, a whistle, basic sanitation items, and copies of important contact information. Keep supplies where they can be reached if cupboards collapse or the power fails. A kit in the garage may be useless if the garage door cannot open, so consider more than one accessible location.

Communication plans are just as important as physical supplies. Families and roommates should agree on an outside contact and a meeting place away from damaged buildings, power lines, and traffic. Text messages may work when voice calls do not, but networks can still be overloaded. Everyone should know how to turn off gas, water, and electricity when necessary, though gas lines should be handled carefully and only if there is a clear reason to do so.

The danger does not always end when the shaking stops. Aftershocks can bring down weakened structures and scatter additional debris. Check yourself and others for injuries, put on shoes, and look for hazards such as broken glass, leaking gas, exposed wires, and unstable ceilings. If you smell gas or hear a hissing sound, leave the area and contact the appropriate emergency service from a safe location. Coastal communities should also pay attention to official warnings about possible tsunami activity after a strong offshore earthquake.

Preparedness is not about predicting the exact day an earthquake will happen. It is about reducing the number of decisions that must be made under pressure. A secured shelf, a practiced response, and a clearly stocked kit may seem insignificant during a calm afternoon. When the ground begins to move, those small choices can provide valuable protection.
