A retirement village is an excellent place to hide a detective. People come and go, routines make small changes noticeable, and residents may have more time—and more experience—than outsiders give them credit for. What looks like a quiet setting can be full of people who know how institutions work, how secrets survive and when someone is lying.
Richard Osman built The Thursday Murder Club around that possibility. Its success rests on more than the novelty of older people solving crimes. The novels invite readers to enjoy a familiar mistake: someone assumes a person is harmless, unobservant or past their prime, and turns out to be spectacularly wrong.
That gap between appearance and ability also connects Osman’s fiction to the television work that made him familiar to British audiences long before his first novel appeared.
From the quiz desk to the crime scene
For years, Osman was the person behind the desk on Pointless, supplying answers, context and dry commentary alongside host Alexander Armstrong. The quiz, which launched in 2009, rewards contestants for finding correct answers that relatively few surveyed people knew.
It is a format built around a pleasing reversal. The obvious answer is not necessarily the valuable one. Overlooked knowledge can win.
Osman, who also worked extensively in television production, became particularly skilled at making knowledge feel sociable rather than intimidating. His on-screen role was authoritative without being solemn. A fact could be interesting, but the conversation around it often supplied the entertainment.
Richard Osman’s House of Games, which began in 2017, makes a similar invitation. Its puzzles give viewers opportunities to make connections, spot patterns and occasionally beat the contestants from their sofas.
Crime fiction offers a related pleasure. Readers collect information, test explanations and notice what others miss. Television quizzes and murder mysteries are not interchangeable, but both depend on controlling the release of information while keeping the audience involved.
The club matters as much as the murder
Published in 2020, The Thursday Murder Club introduces four residents of the fictional Coopers Chase retirement village: Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron. They meet to investigate unsolved cases before finding themselves drawn into a live murder investigation.
The premise is immediately understandable. The characters are what make it sustainable.
Elizabeth brings formidable confidence and a background in intelligence. Joyce, a former nurse, can seem less commanding, yet her apparently wandering observations frequently deserve close attention. Ibrahim, a retired psychiatrist, approaches problems with analytical care. Ron, a former trade union activist, is comfortable challenging people who expect obedience.
Their experience gives them different ways of reading a situation. They do not simply perform four versions of the same detective role.
That distinction helps explain why the series is more than a collection of elaborate puzzles. The investigation gives the characters a reason to act together; their relationships give readers a reason to return. Who withheld a clue matters, but so does who notices that a friend is struggling.
Osman also allows competence and vulnerability to coexist. These characters may be resourceful, funny and difficult to deceive, while still facing illness, bereavement or uncertainty. Their abilities do not cancel out the realities of ageing.
Comfort does not mean nothing hurts
The Thursday Murder Club novels are often described as cosy crime. The label makes sense: there is humour, companionship and a setting readers can become attached to. But it can also suggest that the emotional stakes are lighter than they actually are.
Across books including The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed and The Last Devil to Die, Osman gives grief and loss room alongside the jokes. The contrast is part of the appeal. Humour is not always an escape from painful experiences; sometimes it is how characters remain themselves while living through them.
This is also where the retirement-village setting becomes more than a clever hook. It brings questions of independence, friendship and mortality into ordinary scenes rather than reserving them for a separate, solemn storyline.
The books offer reassurance, but not quite the reassurance that everything will be fine. More often, it is that people can still be useful to one another when things are not.
A useful starting point for new readers
Anyone curious about Osman’s fiction can reasonably begin with The Thursday Murder Club. The mystery has its own resolution, while the book establishes relationships that develop through the sequels. Reading in publication order preserves those changes.
For a different setting, We Solve Murders, published in 2024, begins a separate series featuring retired investigator Steve Wheeler, his daughter-in-law Amy, who works in private security, and novelist Rosie D’Antonio. Its more international, action-oriented premise moves beyond Coopers Chase while retaining an interest in unlikely partnerships.
Neither starting point requires familiarity with Osman’s television career. His public persona may bring readers to the books, but the fiction has a clear attraction of its own: clever plots populated by people whose company matters.
The revealing question in an Osman mystery is often not only “Who did it?” It is “Who have we failed to take seriously?” That second question gives the first one much of its warmth—and some of its sharpest surprises.
