Mike Hesson and the Art of Building Teams Without Egos

Cricket is not kind to small nations. The calendar is crowded, the money flows toward India, England, and Australia, and the best players are often poached by franchise leagues before they ever settle into a national system. Yet for much of the 2010s, New Zealand looked like the smartest team in the room. They fielded well, they ran hard between the wickets, and they rarely beat themselves. A lot of that had to do with Mike Hesson.
When Hesson took over as New Zealand head coach in 2012, he was not a household name outside the country. He was thirty-seven, had coached Otago and Kenya, and carried none of the glamour that usually follows appointments to high-profile cricket jobs. That was precisely the point. New Zealand cricket had decided it wanted a builder, not a brand. Hesson arrived with a reputation for detail, for early mornings in the nets, and for remembering the small things about players that made them feel seen.
His real gift was clarity. International cricket can drown coaches in data, travel, and politics, but Hesson seemed to filter out the noise. Under him, New Zealand developed a style that was easy to recognise and hard to copy: disciplined bowling, athletic fielding, and batting that valued partnerships over personal milestones. It was cricket built on the idea that the collective mattered more than any individual reputation. Senior players were given genuine input, younger players were given clear roles, and the dressing room developed a no-nonsense culture that became the envy of other teams.
The 2015 World Cup was the moment the rest of the world noticed. Co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, the tournament became a showcase for a team that played with freedom and nerve. Brendon McCullum’s explosive batting grabbed the headlines, but the platform for that aggression had been laid over years of careful planning. New Zealand reached the final, lost to a formidable Australian side, and still left the tournament with their reputation transformed. For the first time in a long while, they were not just respected; they were feared.
What made Hesson’s tenure compelling, however, was not perfection. It was the honesty. Coaching international cricket is a relentless job, and by 2018 he admitted that the grind had worn him down. He stepped away from the national team not because he had failed, but because he understood that freshness matters in leadership. It was a human decision in an industry that often pretends exhaustion does not exist.
Since then, Hesson has moved through the global game with the same low-key efficiency. He has worked in the Indian Premier League, advised Cricket Scotland, and taken on roles in various T20 leagues. Wherever he goes, the pattern is the same: he arrives quietly, studies the dressing room, and tries to build a system in which players know exactly what is expected of them. He does not promise miracles. He promises process.
There is a lesson in that for how we think about sports leadership. The best coaches are not always the loudest or the most famous. Sometimes they are the ones who make everyone else look good. Mike Hesson will never be the biggest name in cricket, but the teams he shapes tend to play with an identity. In a sport increasingly dominated by money and celebrity, that is no small achievement.
