Most national leaders rise through law firms, military ranks, or the grinding machinery of party politics. Claudia Sheinbaum followed a less traveled path. Before she managed a budget or gave a stump speech, she built mathematical models of energy use and contributed to international climate research. The climate angle is where outsiders project the most expectation. Mexico is a major oil producer and a nation highly exposed to drought and heat. Sheinbaum’s background suggests she understands the trade-offs better than many politicians. Still, her government has stopped short of abandoning fossil fuel subsidies or dismantling the previous administration’s refinery bets. The reality is that presidential power in Mexico is broad, but economic constraints and political loyalty bind it. A researcher who becomes president still answers to voters, unions, and geopolitical pressure from Washington.
