Joan Laporta is one of the most recognizable figures in modern football leadership. As president of FC Barcelona, he has been closely associated with two very different periods in the club’s recent history: the successful years that began in the early 2000s and the difficult rebuilding process that followed his return to the presidency in 2021.
Laporta first became Barcelona president in 2003, when the club was searching for a new direction. One of the most visible parts of his strategy has been the reliance on young players. The emergence of talents such as Pedri, Gavi, Alejandro Balde and Lamine Yamal has given Barcelona energy and a stronger connection with its academy tradition. These players have also helped the team remain competitive while expensive transfers and high salaries have become harder to sustain.
Laporta’s leadership style is direct and highly political. He understands that Barcelona is more than a football team. It is a member-owned institution with a strong cultural identity, a global fan base and a constant public debate around its management. His statements often carry as much weight outside the pitch as inside it, particularly when discussing the club’s finances, its relationship with La Liga and the future of the Camp Nou.

A modern stadium could improve the club’s long-term commercial strength, but large construction projects bring financial risk, delays and pressure on matchday income. Supporters are interested in the finished venue, yet they also want transparency about costs, deadlines and the effect on the team’s budget.
Laporta’s record is therefore difficult to summarize with a simple label. He has presided over remarkable sporting success, but he has also operated during one of the most complicated financial periods in Barcelona’s history. His greatest strength is the ability to communicate ambition and defend the club’s identity. His biggest test is proving that ambition can be matched by disciplined management.
