Nintendo has a history of revisiting classics, from Link’s Awakening’s charming diorama-style remake to Metroid Prime Remastered’s polished visuals. Ocarina of Time, however, remains trapped in its original polygonal form outside of the modest 3DS update. A Switch 2 remake could do more than just upscale textures—it could redefine Hyrule with modern lighting, physics, and expanded gameplay. Imagine dungeons with enhanced puzzles, smoother combat akin to Breath of the Wild, and orchestrated renditions of Koji Kondo’s iconic score.
What a Modern Remake Could Offer
- Visual Overhaul – The 3DS version improved character models, but a full remake could bring Hyrule to life with the same detail seen in Tears of the Kingdom. Dynamic weather, realistic water reflections, and richer textures could make the world feel more immersive.
- Expanded Content – While the original game is near-perfect, additional side quests—perhaps even cut content from the N64 era—could deepen the adventure.
- Quality-of-Life Improvements – Faster menu navigation, optional hint systems, and gyroscopic aiming for ranged weapons would streamline the experience without sacrificing challenge.
The Timing Is Perfect
With the Switch 2 likely boasting more powerful hardware, Ocarina of Time could finally receive the treatment it deserves. Nintendo has shown it can balance nostalgia with innovation, as seen in Super Mario RPG’s recent remake. A fully reimagined Ocarina would not only delight longtime fans but also introduce a new generation to one of gaming’s most important titles.
Rather than another port, Ocarina of Time needs a remake that respects its history while embracing modern design. Here’s hoping Nintendo hears the call of the ocarina once more.
