# What Is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth positions itself directly between the Sun and the Moon, causing Earth’s shadow to fall across the lunar surface. Because this alignment requires the Sun, Earth, and Moon to be in a nearly straight line, lunar eclipses can only happen during a full moon.
