The Fighter Jet That Tried to Do Everything

There is a moment, just before an F-35B touches down on the deck of an amphibious assault ship, when the aircraft seems to defy its own weight. The engine nozzle points toward the sea, a massive lift fan behind the cockpit inhales air from above, and four smaller nozzles under the wings adjust in tiny increments to keep the jet suspended in place. For a few seconds, a 35,000-pound warplane behaves like a helicopter. It looks wrong. It is also the entire reason the aircraft exists.
The F-35B was conceived to solve a specific problem: how to put a modern fighter where aircraft carriers cannot go. The United States Navy’s supercarriers are fearsome, but there are only so many of them, and they cannot be everywhere. Amphibious assault ships—smaller, cheaper, more numerous—can carry Marines and helicopters close to a coastline, but they lack the catapults and arresting wires needed for conventional fighter jets. The F-35B was built to land on those ships anyway, taking off from short decks and landing vertically when space runs out.
This is not a new idea. The British Harrier proved that a jump jet could change naval warfare in the 1960s and 1970s. But the Harrier was subsonic, lightly armed, and built in an era before stealth and networked warfare. The F-35B promised to combine the Harrier’s flexibility with the sensor fusion, low observability, and computing power of a fifth-generation fighter. The gap between those two ideas turned out to be enormous.
Engineers at Lockheed Martin and Rolls-Royce had to invent a propulsion system that could push the jet forward at supersonic speed and then, within seconds, redirect enough thrust downward to keep it hovering. The result is the F-35B’s lift system, a Rube Goldberg machine of clamshell doors, drive shafts, and a counter-rotating fan. It works. It also adds weight, complexity, and maintenance hours that the Air Force’s conventional F-35A does not have. Every capability comes with a price, and in this case the price is measured in fuel capacity, weapons payload, and the patience of maintainers.
Those trade-offs shaped not just the B variant but the entire F-35 program. Because the three versions of the F-35 were designed together, the need to accommodate the lift fan forced compromises into the airframe shared by the Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy. Critics have argued for years that the F-35A and F-35C would have been better aircraft if the B variant had been developed separately. The counterargument is that without the B, there would be no affordable way for several allied nations to operate advanced fighters from smaller decks at all.
The list of operators tells part of the story. The U.S. Marine Corps was the first customer, using the F-35B to replace its AV-8B Harriers and some of its F/A-18 Hornets. The British Royal Navy bought the jet for its Queen Elizabeth-class carriers, which were designed around the F-35B from the keel up. The Italian Navy operates the aircraft from its smaller carrier, and Japan has converted its Izumo-class helicopter carriers to embark the jet. For countries that want carrier-style airpower without building a 100,000-ton supercarrier, the F-35B is the only game in town.
Flying it, pilots say, requires retraining your instincts. In a conventional landing, you throttle up to stay in the air and ease back to descend. In a vertical landing, you pull back on the thrust to sink toward the deck, trusting the flight computer to keep the jet level and stable. The pilot’s left hand controls throttle and thrust direction with a single lever. The first few times, it feels backward. The aircraft’s computers do most of the work, but the mental load of hovering a fighter jet above a moving ship at night in bad weather is its own kind of difficulty.
On the deck, the challenge shifts to the maintainers. The lift system has more moving parts than a conventional engine arrangement, and salt air, sand, and shipboard vibration take their toll. Keeping the F-35B ready to fly from an amphibious ship demands more space, more spare parts, and more specialized training than older jets required. The program has spent years working through those issues, and while readiness rates have improved, the aircraft remains expensive to keep in the air.
What makes the F-35B interesting is not whether it is the best fighter ever built. It is not even the best F-35. The Air Force’s F-35A can carry more fuel and weapons and fly farther. The Navy’s F-35C is better suited to carrier operations. The B variant sits somewhere in between, sacrificing raw performance for the ability to go places its siblings cannot. That is the bet: flexibility over specialization, presence over perfection.
Whether that bet was worth it depends on what the next war looks like. If future conflicts involve dispersed operations across small airfields and scattered ships, the F-35B’s ability to land almost anywhere will look prescient. If major powers clash in open ocean or across vast distances, its shorter range and smaller payload may look like liabilities. Military procurement is full of aircraft designed for the last war. The F-35B might be designed for a war that has not happened yet.
When one hovers above a flight deck at dusk, the jet does not look like a compromise. It looks like the future some admiral imagined decades ago, finally arriving in the present. But the lift fan spinning behind the cockpit is a reminder that the future is always heavier, louder, and more complicated than the drawing board suggested.
