What Qualifies as "Severe" Weather

Not every storm is officially severe. In the United States, for example, the National Weather Service defines a severe thunderstorm as one producing hail at least one inch in diameter or wind gusts of 58 miles per hour or higher. Similar thresholds exist in other countries. The point of these definitions is practical: they mark the level at which a storm can cause real damage—broken windows, downed trees, roof damage, and injuries.
That said, dangerous weather is not limited to officially "severe" storms. Lightning strikes, heavy rain that causes localized flooding, and sudden fog can all be hazardous without triggering a formal severe weather classification. It helps to think of "severe weather" as both a technical category and a broader reminder: the sky can produce conditions that demand your attention.

The Main Types of Severe Weather

Thunderstorms and lightning. Thunderstorms are among the most common severe weather events. While most produce only rain and gusty wind, some bring large hail, damaging straight-line winds, or tornadoes. Lightning accompanies every thunderstorm and can strike up to ten miles from the rain core. A widely used safety guideline is the 30-30 rule: if the time between a lightning flash and the sound of thunder is 30 seconds or less, go indoors, and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before returning outside.
Tornadoes. A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes are rated on the Enhanced Fujita (EF) scale, from EF0 for light damage up to EF5 for catastrophic destruction. Because a strong tornado can cross a community in minutes, the emphasis is always on acting immediately when a warning is issued rather than waiting to see it.
Hurricanes and tropical storms. These large rotating systems form over warm ocean water. Hurricanes are ranked from Category 1 to 5 on the Saffir-Simpson wind scale, but wind speed is only part of the danger. Water—both storm surge along the coast and inland flooding from heavy rain—causes the majority of hurricane-related deaths. Evacuation orders are usually based on that water threat, not just the wind.
Floods and flash floods. Flooding is one of the most widespread weather hazards because it can occur almost anywhere it rains. Flash floods develop rapidly, often within hours or even minutes of intense rainfall. The safety rule is simple and worth memorizing: never drive or walk through floodwater. As little as six inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and a foot or so can float many vehicles. Emergency agencies summarize it as "Turn Around, Don't Drown."
Winter storms and ice storms. Blizzards combine heavy snow with strong winds and low visibility, making travel dangerous or impossible. Ice storms, where freezing rain coats roads, trees, and power lines, are often more disruptive than snow because ice is heavier and harder to clear. Extended power outages are a common consequence, which makes home preparation especially important in cold climates.
Extreme heat. Heat waves are less dramatic than storms but consistently rank among the deadliest weather hazards. Heat illness progresses from heat cramps to heat exhaustion and, most seriously, heat stroke, which is a medical emergency. Young children, older adults, outdoor workers, and people without reliable air conditioning face the highest risk.
Dust storms and other regional hazards. Depending on geography, severe weather may also mean haboobs and dust storms in arid regions, damaging downslope winds near mountains, or dangerous rip currents along coastlines driven by offshore weather.

Watches, Warnings, and Advisories: Know the Difference

Weather alerts follow a consistent logic in most countries, and understanding it can save you valuable decision-making time during an event.

  • A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather. Nothing dangerous may be happening yet, but you should stay informed and review your plans.
  • A warning means severe weather has been detected or is imminent. This is the signal to take protective action immediately—move to shelter, postpone travel, or evacuate if instructed.
  • An advisory indicates less severe conditions that are still inconvenient or hazardous, such as dense fog or modest snow accumulations.

A common mistake is treating a watch as a reason to wait. Watches exist precisely because the lead time they provide—hours, sometimes a day or more—is when you should charge devices, secure outdoor items, and confirm where you will shelter if things escalate.
Modern alerts reach people through multiple channels: smartphone wireless emergency alerts, NOAA Weather Radio in the U.S., local broadcast media, and official apps or social media accounts from weather services. Having at least two ways to receive alerts matters, because power and cell service can fail during an event.

Preparing Before Severe Weather Arrives

Good preparation is mostly unglamorous and done well in advance. The essentials:
Build an emergency kit. Stock water (roughly one gallon per person per day for several days), non-perishable food, flashlights, spare batteries, a first-aid kit, necessary medications, phone chargers or a power bank, and copies of important documents. In cold climates, add blankets and warm layers in case heating fails.
Make a family communication plan. Decide in advance where everyone will shelter at home—a basement or interior room on the lowest floor for tornadoes, for instance—and how you will reunite or check in if separated. Choose an out-of-area contact, since long-distance lines are sometimes more reliable during regional emergencies.
Know your home's vulnerabilities. Trim dead tree branches near the house, secure or bring in outdoor furniture before high winds, keep gutters clear so heavy rain drains properly, and know how to shut off utilities if needed.
Review insurance and documentation. Standard homeowner policies often exclude flood damage, which requires separate coverage. Photographing your home and belongings before a disaster makes any later claim far easier.
Plan for specific hazards where you live. Coastal residents should know their evacuation zone and routes. Tornado-prone regions call for identifying the safest room in the house. Cold climates argue for a car emergency kit with an ice scraper, blanket, and shovel.

Staying Safe During the Event

During severe weather, the goal shifts from preparation to protection.
In a tornado warning, go to a basement or storm shelter if available; otherwise, an interior room on the lowest floor away from windows. Mobile homes and vehicles are poor shelters—if you are in one with no better option, follow local guidance about abandoning them for sturdy shelter.
During a thunderstorm, stay indoors and away from windows, and avoid corded electronics, plumbing, and landline phones, which can conduct electricity from a strike.
In a flood, never underestimate moving water. If authorities say to evacuate, go early—driving through flooded roads at night, when the depth is hard to judge, is a leading cause of flood deaths.
In extreme heat, shift outdoor activity to early morning, drink water before you feel thirsty, and check on neighbors who live alone. If air conditioning is unavailable, spending even a few hours in a cooling center or public building helps the body recover.
In a winter power outage, run generators outdoors only, far from windows, because carbon monoxide poisoning is a serious and preventable danger. Layer clothing rather than relying on a single heavy item.
One principle applies to all of these: decisions made during the event are rushed and stressful. The more you decided beforehand—where to go, what to grab, when to leave—the fewer critical choices you face when time is short.

After the Storm

Dangers do not end when the wind stops. Downed power lines should always be treated as live. Floodwater often carries sewage, chemicals, and debris. Gas leaks, weakened structures, and carbon monoxide from improper generators cause injuries in the days following disasters. Photograph damage for insurance, follow official guidance on water safety, and check on neighbors—recovery goes faster when communities look out for each other.

Common Misconceptions Worth Correcting

Several persistent myths increase risk. Opening windows during a tornado does nothing to "equalize pressure"—it wastes time you should spend sheltering. Lightning can and does strike the same place twice. A hurricane's category describes wind only, so a weakening storm can still produce catastrophic flooding. And heat deaths occur well outside deserts; humid regions are often more dangerous because sweat evaporates less effectively.

The Bigger Picture

Weather services, improved forecasting, and instant alerts have dramatically reduced fatalities from many hazards compared with decades past, and forecast lead times for tornadoes and hurricanes continue to improve. At the same time, a warming climate is shifting patterns of extremes in many regions, including heavier downpours, longer heat waves, and, in some areas, more intense hurricanes. No single forecast or policy solves that; individual preparedness and reliable public warning systems remain the two most effective tools available.
Severe weather is a fact of life in nearly every climate. You cannot control the atmosphere, but you can control how informed, equipped, and ready you are when it turns dangerous. Start with the basics—an alert source you trust, a kit, a plan—and revisit them each season. The people who fare best in disasters are rarely the ones who improvise well; they are the ones who prepared early.
