The story goes that a rat wandered into the Panthers' dressing room before a game in the fall of 1995. Scott Mellanby, a veteran forward with a heavy shot and no particular interest in becoming a folk hero, killed it with his stick. Then he went out and scored two goals.
Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck joked that Mellanby had recorded a "rat trick." Someone in the stands remembered the line. By spring, plastic rats were raining onto the ice in Sunrise every time the Panthers scored — hundreds at first, then thousands, a bizarre ritual for a team nobody had expected to still be playing in May. That season ended in the 1996 Stanley Cup Final, where Colorado swept Florida in four straight and the rats stopped flying.
For the next quarter century, that was the whole story. A rat, a Cinderella run, and then nothing much.
Twenty-five winters of nothing much
Between 1997 and 2021, the Panthers did not win a single playoff series. Not one. They made the postseason here and there, usually as a lower seed, usually gone within a week. They cycled through owners, general managers, and coaches the way other organizations cycle through fourth-line wingers. There were good players — Roberto Luongo, Olli Jokinen, a young Aleksander Barkov — but never a good team, and rarely a coherent one.
South Florida developed a reputation as a place where hockey went to be forgotten. The building in Sunrise sat half full on weeknights. Snowbirds and transplants filled the good seats when the Rangers or Canadiens came to town, which meant the Panthers sometimes played home games in front of more opposing fans than their own. That's the kind of thing that grinds an organization down.
Vincent Viola bought the team in 2013 and, notably, kept it in Broward County when relocating would have been simpler and cheaper. That decision matters more in hindsight than it did at the time.
Built out of other teams' leftovers
In September 2020, Viola hired Bill Zito as general manager. Zito's background was in player representation, not the traditional scouting ladder, and his early moves looked unremarkable. That was the point.
Carter Verhaeghe had won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay but couldn't hold down a top-six role there. Zito signed him. Gustav Forsling was claimed off waivers from Carolina in January 2021 — a depth defenceman who had already been traded twice. Sam Bennett arrived from Calgary, Sam Reinhart from Buffalo, Brandon Montour from the same place. None of these were headline acquisitions. All of them were players with something to prove and a reason to be angry about how their careers had gone.
Forsling is the clearest illustration. Waived at 24, he became a top-pairing defender who quietly shuts down the best forwards in the league. Nobody predicted that. What the Panthers did was give him a role and enough time to grow into it.
Meanwhile, Matthew Tkachuk forced a trade out of Calgary in the summer of 2022, and Florida sent Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar the other way — two excellent players, one of them the franchise's all-time leading scorer. It was the kind of trade that gets a general manager fired if it goes wrong.
A style you can't fake
Paul Maurice took over as head coach in June 2022 and gave the roster an identity: relentless forechecking, physical along the walls, and an almost stubborn refusal to trade chances. The Panthers don't try to out-skill you. They try to make the game exhausting.
That approach announced itself in the 2023 playoffs. Down 3-1 to a Boston team that had just set a regular-season record with 65 wins, Florida won three straight and closed the series out in Boston. Then they beat Toronto, swept Carolina, and reached the Final, where Vegas was simply better. A year later they finished the job, holding off Edmonton in Game 7 after nearly blowing a 3-0 series lead. In 2025 they won it again, beating the same opponent in six.
Watching those runs, one thing stands out: the Panthers are greater than the sum of their parts in a way that's genuinely difficult to manufacture. Barkov, the captain and the best two-way centre of his generation, rarely appears on highlight reels; he wins Selke Trophies and makes everyone around him better. Sergei Bobrovsky, signed to a huge contract in 2019, was benched during the 2023 run and could easily have been written off — instead he was superb in both championship series. Tkachuk agitates, draws penalties, and scores in the moments that matter.
That's not a collection of superstars. It's a collection of people who fit.
What Sunrise figured out
The rats came back, of course. Fans throw them after playoff series wins now, which the league tolerates with visible reluctance. The arena sells out. Local television ratings in a market that supposedly doesn't care about hockey have been among the strongest in the United States.
There's a lesson here that goes beyond one team in one county. For years, the conventional wisdom held that hockey couldn't work in warm-weather markets without a generational superstar or a decades-long head start. Tampa Bay had already challenged that idea. Florida has now done it a different way — through patient ownership, unglamorous roster decisions, and a style of play that gives fans something concrete to cheer for.
None of it happened quickly, and none of it looked inevitable while it was happening. For twenty-five years, the Panthers were the punchline. Now they're the standard.
