The Geely EX2 and the Case for the Ordinary Electric Car

Somewhere between the thousand-horsepower flagships and the endless arguments about charging standards, the electric car quietly became ordinary. Nobody throws a launch party for ordinary. But ordinary is where the actual transition to electric driving will be decided — in the driveways, curbsides, and basement garages of people who buy one car, keep it for a decade, and use it mostly for commuting, school runs, and the weekly shop.
The Geely EX2 is built for exactly that buyer. It is worth paying attention to precisely because it isn't glamorous.

What the EX2 actually is

Unveiled in 2025 and expected to reach showrooms from 2026, the EX2 is the smallest member of Geely's international electric SUV line, sitting below the EX3 that arrived in markets such as Brazil earlier in the year. Exact specifications — battery size, motor output, final range figures — will vary from country to country, and Geely has been open about tuning each market's version to local conditions and price points.
The broad strokes are clear all the same. This is a compact crossover in the neighborhood of four meters long, with a single electric motor driving the front wheels and, in all likelihood, an iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack of modest size — the chemistry every manufacturer uses at this price. Claimed range will land in the low hundreds of kilometers on paper. In practice, that means a dependable 200-odd kilometers of real-world city driving, a bit more with a calm right foot and kind weather.
If those numbers sound modest, that is the point. This class of car doesn't exist to cross continents. It exists to replace a gasoline hatchback in daily life, at a purchase price that ordinary households can actually consider.

The company you may not know you know

Plenty of readers outside China have never consciously bought anything with a Geely badge. Many have nonetheless bought Geely products. The group owns Volvo Cars, holds a controlling stake in Lotus and a significant share of Mercedes-Benz Group, and owns half of Malaysia's Proton. The carmaking arm sells more than two million vehicles a year, and its brand family includes Zeekr, Lynk & Co, and Galaxy.
The relevance here is simple: an affordable car only stays affordable if the company behind it survives and supports it. Cheap vehicles from unknown manufacturers have a long history of turning expensive through parts scarcity, thin service networks, and brutal depreciation. Geely arrives with the balance sheet, the manufacturing scale, and the international track record to plausibly avoid that fate — and a history of building cars where it sells them, Proton in Malaysia being the clearest example. Whether it manages the same in each individual market is a separate question, and one worth putting to a dealer directly before signing anything.

Why the cheap end of the market matters most

Electric vehicle adoption is usually discussed as if it were one global story. It isn't. In China, Europe, and parts of North America, the conversation has moved on to charging speeds, software, and whether 600 kilometers of range is enough. Across much of Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, the starting point is entirely different: enormous numbers of households that get around on two wheels or aging small gasoline cars, for whom a new vehicle is a once-a-decade financial event.
For those buyers, the arithmetic that matters isn't zero-to-sixty. It's the monthly cost of fuel against the monthly cost of electricity, the maintenance schedule of an engine against the near-absence of one in an EV, and whether the purchase price fits the family budget at all. A small battery is a feature here rather than a compromise — it is the heaviest, most expensive component in the car, and every kilowatt-hour shaved off brings the whole vehicle closer to attainable.
There is a charging argument too, and it runs opposite to the one heard in wealthy markets. A small battery charges happily overnight from an ordinary household socket — no wallbox, no installation, no negotiation with a landlord. In cities where public charging is still sparse, that matters more than any fast-charging figure on a spec sheet.

What a car like this asks of you

None of this is an argument for buying one sight unseen. An affordable EV from a brand newly arrived in your market involves genuine tradeoffs, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
Range claims deserve skepticism. Official figures, whether from China's generous CLTC cycle or local equivalents, run optimistic, and air conditioning in a hot climate takes a real bite. Service networks deserve a hard look — what exists in your city, in writing: warranty terms, parts availability, roadside assistance. Resale value is the honest unknown. First-generation products from newly arrived brands depreciate unpredictably. If you keep cars for a decade, that matters little; if you trade every three years, it matters a great deal.
And the real competition isn't another new EV. It's a three-year-old used gasoline car with a known service history, known resale, and a fuel bill. The only comparison worth making is total cost of ownership over your actual ownership period, not sticker price against sticker price.
For the right buyer — a city dweller with somewhere to plug in at night, predictable daily distances, and no illusions about long road trips — the trade can work out well. For anyone else, a hybrid or a good used car may still be the smarter money.

The quiet math of the transition

The cars that actually change a market have never been the ones on the posters. The Model T, the Beetle, the Corolla — none of them won anything on performance. They won on price, dependability, and fit with how people genuinely lived.
The EX2 may or may not join that lineage. Execution, pricing, tariffs, and local assembly will decide, and the first owners will carry some risk in exchange for the low entry price. But the category it represents is where the next hundred million electric vehicles will come from — sold not in Oslo or Shenzhen but in Bangkok, Jakarta, São Paulo, and Casablanca, to buyers who never read a spec sheet and just need to get to work.
That's the ordinary electric car. Someone has finally built a business plan around it.
