What remains consistent across cultures and technologies is the organ's peculiar status: simultaneously property and person, machine and meaning. We can legally sell plasma in some countries but not kidneys, can patent gene sequences but not whole people, yet struggle to articulate why these distinctions matter. Perhaps because they ultimately don't—not to the body itself, which simply continues its relentless, unphilosophical work of keeping alive whatever consciousness happens to inhabit it.
